From North VS South...

The "Arrabida" take-off sites are on the top of the "Praia de Portinho da Arrabida". It is located at 15 km of Sesimbra.
The take-off require a lot of attention and are very technical. Arrabida is a excellent flying site in dynamic (soaring), The landing place is on the beach where you can fold up your canopy and chat with many very good local paragliders..
The "Serra da Arrabida" is a hybrid flying site. It has a lot of potentialities from a short flight ending on the beach or to get around a cross-flight to Sesimbra. and more…

The Serra da Arrabida flying sites have three main characteristics:

Flying from the Southern slope: Mainly soaring (dynamic), during eastern it is thermodynamic but unfortunately it is forbidden to fly during summer holidays. The landing place is on the beach and it is quite a crowd.

Flying form the Nothern slope: Mainly thermodynamic and sometimes you could get good thermals.

The hills bordering the see have all the advantages of flying in dynamics and disadvantages due to the thermals.

How to reach it:?

If you come from Setubal: National 10, in Aldeia Grande turn to Vale da Rasca.

In Setubal: at the end of Av. Luisa Todi turn to the serra (mountains) until you meet a crossroad before the cement factory SECIL.

If you are coming from Lisbon: N 10, in Azeitão you turn to Sesimbra till you find a crossroad which climbs to the hill.

Portinho da Arrábida

The take-of site is just under the first belverdere (miradouro) that you see when climbing in the hills from Setubal. The landing site is on the praia da Figueirinha that is on the left side of the take-off. You see it just after you have launched.

Flying to praia do Portinho da Arrábida (E): the take-off site is a wooden ramp made for Delta's take-of. Pay attention! the launch is very technical due to the effect of the ramp and you risk tearing your glider.

The landing site is on the beach that you see under your feet.

Flying from Norte (N, NE, NW):

The official take-off site requires 10 min walking in the middle of the "serra" The more skilled paragliders have chosen the first northern belvedere (miradouro) just after the Figueirinha's take-off (to those who are coming from Setubal). The official landing site is around a small old house that you see at the left side of the belvedere.

If you would like to take-off from the Serra's highest site (Formosinho), it is located just near the triangulation point (Alt: approx. 500 m). You should walk for half an hour in the middle of the Serra. The walking conditions are more sever than the official take-off site. Do not forget that it is forbidden to take-off in the Serra da Arrabida Reserve but the view is great.

Some have already launched from Norte (Formosinho or belvedere) and landed in Sesimbra (climbing one thousand meter higher than the take-off). With the Delta some have launched from Norte and arrived at the Serra S. Luis, stopping over Setúbal, entrering in a thermal just over the city and finally landed in Montemor. In Portugal it is difficult to find a site so nice.
